Sholay: The Mouth Organ Scene

The iconic mouth organ track from the famous evening scene in Sholay where Radha (Jaya) lights a lamp as Jai (Amitabh) plays mouth organ at a distance was composed by Bhanu Gupta, a talented member of the RD Burman team. Jai’s mouth organ track is an expression of his desire to be loved, while the melancholic tune reflects Radha's sadness and Jai's longing for her. The scene exemplifies a brilliant sync between the screenwriter, cinematographer, director and music composer. In an interview, Ramesh Sippy noted that the mouth organ scene took several days to shoot as they wanted perfect lighting and timing for the frame. Sholay released on 15th August 1975, in 70 MM Technicolor. A review in Star&Style (12th Sep. 1975) noted, “Jaya conveys almost everything with her face…we have hardly any other Hindi actress who can do such a feat, of expressing sadness and hope”.
